Why visit Skardu, Pakistan?

Skardu sits at the confluence of the Indus and Shigar rivers, ringed by some of the highest, driest, and most dramatic terrain on earth. It's the last real town before the road runs out and the trekking begins. The gateway to K2, the Baltoro Glacier, and Deosai, "the land of giants." But you don't need a trekking permit or three weeks off work to feel it. Within a two-hour drive of Skardu city there's a 500-year-old fort, three glacial lakes in three different shades of blue-green, a cold desert of wind-carved dunes, and a waterfall that free-falls forty metres into a green ravine.

This guide covers the nine scenes we keep going back for. Where they are, how far, when to go, and why each one is worth the detour. Think of it as a trail map for Baltistan's greatest hits, whether you have three days or ten.

Kharpocho Fort — the "Rock of Skardu"

"Climb it once for the fort, come back forever for the light."

Kharpocho, locally the "Rock of Skardu", was raised in the 16th century by Raja Ali Sher Khan Anchan on a bare rock spur that shoots straight up from the valley floor, and it has been watching over the confluence of the Indus and Sadpara rivers ever since. What survives today is more silhouette than palace: crumbling ramparts, a watchtower, and the outline of a mosque, but that's exactly the point. The climb is short: twenty to thirty minutes up a rocky switchback path, and every few steps the view widens until Skardu's poplar groves, the braided river, and the entire Katpana plain unfold beneath you in one frame.

Time it for the last ninety minutes of daylight. The cliff face turns the colour of the fort's own weathered stone, the Indus goes molten gold, and the peaks ringing the valley catch alpenglow long after the town below has gone into shadow. Bring water, decent shoes for loose scree, and a wide-angle lens. This is the one shot every Skardu blog opens with, and it earns that reputation honestly.

Shangrila Resort cottages beside the heart-shaped Lower Kachura Lake in Skardu
Lower Kachura Lake at Shangrila Resort, Skardu.
Glacial lake · Iconic photo stop

Shangrila Resort & Lower Kachura Lake

"The one everyone photographs, and the one worth photographing."

Shangrila earned its "Heaven on Earth" nickname decades ago, and even with a resort built into its shoreline, Lower Kachura Lake still delivers on the promise. Fed by glacial melt and shielded by a ring of hills, the water sits in a deep, saturated turquoise that shifts with the light. Pale jade at midday, near-emerald by late afternoon, with poplar and willow groves doubling every colour on the surface. The old crashed-plane-shaped gateway and lakeside restaurant have become photo landmarks in their own right, but the real draw is simply sitting at the water's edge with the Karakoram foothills stacked behind it.

It's about a 30–45 minute drive from Skardu city on a paved road, which makes it the easiest "wow" moment on this whole list. Perfect for a half-day if you're short on time, or as the calm first stop before you head deeper into the valley. Paddle boats are available on the lake, and the resort's gardens are worth a slow walk even if you're not staying overnight. Go early or late to beat the midday tour-bus crowd.

Turquoise water of Upper Kachura Lake with wooden boats, framed by willow trees near Skardu
Upper Kachura Lake, around 70 metres deep. Undeveloped compared with Shangrila next door, which is exactly why people walk the five minutes over.
Glacial lake · Quiet escape

Upper Kachura Lake

"Same water, no crowd, the introvert's version of Shangrila."

A short drive and a five-minute walk beyond the noise of Shangrila, Upper Kachura Lake is the calmer sibling most day-trippers skip, which is exactly what makes it worth the extra few minutes. The lake sits in a tighter, more forested bowl, and without a resort built directly onto its bank, the water lies almost perfectly still, mirroring the surrounding peaks so cleanly that photos often need no editing to look surreal. Locals sometimes call this the "real" Shangrila lake, since the name Shangrila originally belonged to the whole valley, not just the resort.

There's little infrastructure here beyond a few benches and a boat or two, and that's the appeal. It rewards travelers who want a slow half hour by the water rather than a checklist photo. Come in the late afternoon when the wind usually drops and the reflection turns glass-flat, or early morning for soft mist rising off the surface. Pair it with Lower Kachura on the same outing; they're close enough that skipping one to save time barely saves any time at all.

Sunlight on the turquoise water of Satpara Lake near Skardu
Satpara Lake, the gateway to the Deosai road.
Glacial lake · Gateway to Deosai

Satpara Lake

"Where the town ends and the wilderness starts."

Satpara is Skardu's working lake as much as its scenic one. Its dam feeds the whole valley, but that hasn't dulled its looks. Squeezed into a narrow gorge just south of the city, the water runs a deep, almost gunmetal blue-green, framed by steep, grey, largely treeless mountains that are your first real hint of Deosai's high-altitude terrain further up the same road. Wooden boats ferry visitors across for photos with the peaks doubled in the water, and the lake is stocked with trout if you want to fish rather than just look.

Most travelers treat Satpara as a fifteen-minute stop on the way to Deosai, and it's true the lake gets more dramatic the higher you climb past it. But it deserves its own slower visit too. Come for the boat ride, stay for the little roadside dhabas serving fresh trout and salty butter tea with the lake as a backdrop. If Deosai is on your itinerary, this is also your last stretch of paved, easy road before the 4x4-only climb begins.

Sheosar Lake on the Deosai Plains, one of the highest lakes in the world
Sheosar Lake, Deosai National Park, at 4,250 m.
National park · Alpine plateau

Deosai National Park — "Land of the Giants"

"No trees, no walls, no horizon you can trust. Just plain, huge sky."

Deosai is one of the highest plateaus on earth, a rolling, treeless expanse sitting around 4,100 metres that looks more like Tibet or the Mongolian steppe than anything you'd expect a two-hour drive from a river valley. From late June through August it turns into a rippling carpet of wildflowers. Edelweiss, gentians, and buttercups, grazed by wild horses and, if you're lucky and quiet, watched from a distance by the Himalayan brown bear the park was created to protect. Sheosar Lake, roughly midway across the plateau, is the plains' own showpiece: a still, cobalt lake with barely a tree in sight to interrupt the reflection.

The road up from Satpara is unpaved and jeep-only in sections, climbing fast enough that altitude and cold catch people off guard even in July. Pack layers regardless of how warm Skardu felt that morning. Deosai is only accessible roughly June to September; the rest of the year it's buried under snow and cut off entirely. Because of the altitude and distance, treat it as a full day trip from Skardu, or better, stay a night at one of the seasonal camps near Bara Pani to catch both sunset and sunrise over the plains without the long drive twice.

Sand dunes of the cold desert near Skardu with snow-capped Karakoram peaks behind
Cold-desert dunes on the Skardu valley floor.
Cold desert · Jeep safari

Sarfaranga Cold Desert

"Sahara-shaped dunes with an ice-capped skyline behind them."

Sarfaranga, also called the Katpana Desert, is one of the highest cold deserts in the world, a genuine stretch of wind-sculpted sand dunes running along the Indus, with the snow peaks of the Karakoram rising directly behind them. It's a strange, brilliant contrast: golden sand underfoot, glacier-fed river alongside, and a wall of white summits on the horizon, all in the same 180-degree view. Local drivers run jeep safaris straight up and over the dunes, and ATV rides and horse riding have become popular add-ons for anyone wanting more than photos.

The desert also hosts Pakistan's official Sarfaranga Jeep Rally, so if your visit lines up with the event the whole place turns into a motorsport spectacle. Otherwise it's usually quiet enough that you'll have long stretches of dune to yourself. Go in the late afternoon: the low sun rakes across the ripples in the sand and throws long shadows that make the dunes look twice as tall as they are, and the temperature drops from desert-hot to mountain-cool the moment the sun dips behind the ridge.

Shigar Fort, a restored 17th-century Balti stone and timber palace near Skardu
Shigar Fort, locally Fong Khar, restored between 1999 and 2004 by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. It operates as a heritage hotel but non-guests can tour it.
Heritage fort · Shigar Valley

Shigar Fort (Fong Khar)

"Four centuries of Balti carving, restored down to the last window frame."

An hour north of Skardu, Shigar Valley opens up around orchards, poplar-lined canals, and this 17th-century fort-palace built by the Amacha rulers of Shigar directly into the rock face. Fong Khar. "palace on the rock", nearly collapsed into ruin before the Aga Khan Trust for Culture restored it over a decade-long project, and the result is one of the finest surviving examples of Tibeto-Balti architecture anywhere: hand-carved wooden lattices, stone-and-timber walls built to survive earthquakes, and courtyards that still smell faintly of apricot wood.

Part of the fort now operates as a heritage guesthouse, so even non-guests can usually wander the museum rooms and gardens for a modest fee, tracing carvings that took master Balti craftsmen years to finish. Shigar itself is worth lingering in beyond the fort. It's the last proper valley town before the road climbs toward Askole and the approach to K2 and the Baltoro Glacier, so there's a genuine "edge of the map" feeling here that Skardu city, busier and more developed, has mostly lost.

Manthokha Waterfall falling 55 metres in the Kharmang valley near Skardu
Manthokha Waterfall in Kharmang, 55 m high and roadside — one of the few major sights near Skardu that needs no hike at all.
Waterfall · Kharmang Valley

Manthokha Waterfall

"You hear it before the road even bends toward it."

Manthokha drops roughly 55 metres off a sheer cliff in the Kharmang Valley, making it one of the tallest waterfalls in Pakistan, and one of the few natural sights around Skardu you can enjoy without any hiking at all. It's a genuine roadside stop, tucked right beside the Skardu–Kharmang road. The contrast is the whole appeal: dry, khaki-coloured cliffs on either side, then this constant white column of glacier meltwater crashing down into a narrow, surprisingly green ravine, with spray cool enough to feel from the viewing platforms even in peak summer heat.

A small park has grown up around the base, with seating, a modest café, and shaded spots for a picnic lunch within sight of the falls. A good reason to plan the visit around midday rather than rushing through. It's further out than most of the other stops on this list, so it works best as an add-on to a Kharmang or Kharpocho-side loop, or as a deliberate half-day trip if waterfalls and quieter roads are more your pace than the busier Shangrila circuit.

Green alpine valley scenery with pine forest near Skardu, Gilgit-Baltistan
Alpine meadow above the valley floor. Grass like this only appears where meltwater channels reach, which is why the green is so sharply bounded.
Alpine valley · Camping & meadows

Basho Valley

"Skardu's hidden meadow, the one your driver keeps to himself."

Basho sits off the Skardu–Shigar road, a side valley of pine and birch forest, glacier-fed streams, and open alpine meadows that never made it into the standard tour itinerary, and is better for it. The last stretch usually means swapping the car for a jeep or a short hike, which naturally filters out the day-trip crowds. Most visitors who make the effort camp overnight rather than turn around, which is exactly how the valley is meant to be experienced.

By day it's a quiet forest walk beside cold, clear water; by night, at close to 3,000 metres and far from any town's light, it turns into one of the more reliable stargazing spots near Skardu, with the Milky Way visible without needing to drive further into Deosai. Come prepared to camp. Warm layers even in July, a proper sleeping bag, and food and water carried in, since facilities are minimal by design. If Shangrila is Skardu's most photographed lake and Deosai its most famous plateau, Basho is the stop for travelers who'd rather have a valley to themselves for an evening than another crowded viewpoint.

Is Skardu safe to travel?

Yes. Skardu is one of the most visited parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, and solo travellers, families and foreign visitors go routinely. The real risks are environmental rather than criminal: mountain roads with sheer drops, altitude on the Deosai plateau above 4,000 m, and weather that cancels flights. No permit is needed for Skardu, Shigar, Khaplu, Kharmang or Deosai; permits apply only to restricted zones near the Line of Control and to high mountaineering. The GB tourist police helpline is 1422.

Skardu famous things to buy

Dried apricots are what Skardu is most famous for — lighter, cheaper and better here than anywhere else in Pakistan. After that: apricot oil, walnuts in shell, handwoven Pattu cloth, woollen shawls, Balti caps, wooden handicrafts, and gemstones or mineral specimens if you know what you are looking at. Dry fruit shops cluster on Alamdar Road; handicrafts and gems are concentrated in Chasma Bazaar. There are no malls, only bazaar shops and independent stores.

Skardu closes early, so if you land late: Shabab Restaurant in Hassan Colony and Skardu Balti Cuisine Food in Gamba run 24 hours, Skardu Food Street until 1am, and Village Restaurant at Kachura until 3am.

Shangrila Resort Skardu entry fees 2026

Day entry for non-guests is roughly PKR 1,000 to 1,500 per person, covering the lakeside gardens, jetty and paths; boat hire and food are extra. Rooms run about PKR 29,500 to 35,000 a night in peak season. Shangrila sits 25 km from the city on a sealed road, so any car manages it. Go before 9am or after 4pm, as domestic coach parties fill the site between about 10am and 3pm.

Desert safari in Skardu: Sarfaranga prices

The desert safari people mean is at Sarfaranga Cold Desert, about 30 km from the city. A jeep dune safari runs around PKR 12,000 per vehicle for roughly 20 minutes, an ATV around PKR 8,000, and paragliding or motor gliding around PKR 15,000 per person, all cash and negotiated on site. Late afternoon is both the best light and the most comfortable temperature. Sandboarding is often listed online but is not actually offered there.

Every activity, current prices and what the site lacks: Sarfaranga Cold Desert guide.

High altitude guide: altitude sickness, AMS, HACE and HAPE

Skardu city sits at 2,228 m, Deosai at 4,114 m and K2 base camp at about 5,135 m. Altitude sickness (AMS) can begin above 2,500 m and is the single most common medical reason visitors need help in Gilgit-Baltistan. Symptoms include headache, nausea, fatigue and poor sleep; the serious forms — HACE (brain) and HAPE (lungs) — require immediate descent. Acetazolamide (Diamox) helps with acclimatisation but needs a prescription.

Use the altitude sickness calculator to check your symptoms against the Lake Louise AMS score, read HACE and HAPE warning signs, and get evidence-based acclimatisation advice before you leave Skardu for the high passes.

Visiting Skardu from the USA: visa, flights and the bucket-list K2 trek

Americans need a Pakistan e-visa before they fly: US$60 for a single-entry tourist visa on a US passport, applied for online at visa.nadra.gov.pk, with no visa on arrival in 2026. There are no nonstop US–Pakistan flights, so the usual route is one stop via Istanbul, Doha, Dubai or Abu Dhabi to Islamabad, then the one-hour flight to Skardu. The US travel advisory rates Pakistan Level 3 overall; Gilgit-Baltistan is not one of its Level 4 areas.

Step by step: Pakistan visa for US citizens, how to get to Skardu from the USA (flights, cash, SIM cards) and is Skardu safe for Americans.

K2 base camp trek from Skardu

Skardu is the starting point for the trek to K2 base camp (about 5,135 m), which runs from Askole up the Baltoro Glacier to Concordia. It takes 10–13 trekking days, costs roughly US$1,500–3,000 guided, and needs a licensed operator, a trekking permit and a trekking visa. Full details: K2 base camp trek cost, permits and itinerary.

How to reach Skardu & the best time to visit Skardu

Choosing dates? Our best month to visit Skardu guide compares every month on weather, Deosai access, autumn colour, crowds and price.

The scenes are the highlight, but getting the logistics right is what makes the trip enjoyable. Here's the short version of what to know before you book.

Getting there

How to reach Skardu from Islamabad

PIA and private airlines fly Islamabad–Skardu in under an hour on a clear day, with window-seat views of Nanga Parbat that rival the destination itself. Though flights are weather-dependent and cancellations happen. The overland option follows the Karakoram Highway through Chilas, roughly 18–22 hours of driving usually broken into two days, and is a spectacular trip in its own right if you have the time.

Best time to visit

Peak season: June to September

Skardu city is pleasant from May through October, but Deosai and Basho only open once the snow clears, usually early-to-mid June, and close again by early October. July and August are the greenest and busiest months; September brings golden poplar trees, cooler air, and noticeably thinner crowds.

Getting around

Getting around Skardu

Most of these scenes are best reached with a hired car or jeep and driver rather than self-drive, especially for Deosai and Basho where the roads are unpaved and route knowledge matters. Guesthouses and hotels in Skardu can arrange day trips and multi-day loops, often bundling two or three stops per day.

Where to stay

Where to stay in Skardu

Skardu city has the widest range of hotels and guesthouses and works well as a base for day trips. For a slower pace, Shigar and Khaplu both have heritage forts converted into boutique guesthouses, and Deosai has seasonal camps for those who want sunrise on the plateau.

What to pack

What to pack for Skardu

Skardu city can be warm in summer while Deosai and Basho sit near freezing at night even in July. Pack a proper jacket and thermal layer regardless of season, sturdy walking shoes for forts and dunes, sunscreen and sunglasses for the high-altitude sun, and cash. Card acceptance thins out quickly beyond the city.

Local food

What to eat in Skardu

Don't leave without trying mamtu (steamed dumplings), paba (buckwheat bread with butter and sugar), fresh Satpara trout, dried and fresh apricots at their peak in late summer, and namkeen chai. Salted butter tea, the valley's answer to coffee.

Suggested route

Skardu itinerary: a realistic 5-day plan, day by day

A realistic pace that groups the stops by direction so you're not backtracking across the valley. Add a day if you want to linger, or a day on either end for flight buffer.

DAY 1

Arrive & the city fort

Land in Skardu, settle in, and save the late afternoon for Kharpocho Fort. An easy first outing that also gets you oriented to the whole valley from above before you start exploring it at ground level.

DAY 2

The lakes loop

Morning and midday at Shangrila and Upper Kachura Lake, then swing back via Satpara Lake in the late afternoon for a boat ride and trout dinner nearby.

DAY 3
Deosai Plains, full day

An early 4x4 start up through Satpara toward the plateau. Spend the day among the wildflowers and Sheosar Lake, or camp overnight near Bara Pani if you want sunrise over Deosai without doubling the drive.

DAY 4
Shigar Valley & the cold desert

Morning at Shigar Fort and a walk through the valley's orchards, then head to Sarfaranga Cold Desert for a late-afternoon jeep safari and sunset over the dunes.

DAY 5
Manthokha, or Basho overnight

Choose your pace: a half-day out to Manthokha Waterfall before an afternoon flight home, or extend the trip with an overnight camp in Basho Valley for the best stargazing near Skardu.

Skardu travel FAQs

What are the best places to visit in Skardu?

The most visited places in Skardu are Deosai National Park, Shangrila Resort (Lower Kachura Lake), Upper Kachura Lake, Satpara Lake, Kharpocho Fort, Sarfaranga Cold Desert, Shigar Fort, Manthokha Waterfall and Basho Valley. Deosai and the Kachura lakes are the two most popular, and all nine can be covered in a 5-day trip.

How many days are enough for a Skardu trip?

Five days is the sweet spot. Three days covers the sights close to the city (Kharpocho Fort, the Kachura lakes and Satpara Lake), five days adds a full day for Deosai plus Shigar Fort and Sarfaranga Cold Desert, and seven days lets you add Khaplu or Basho Valley.

What is the total cost of a Skardu trip from Islamabad?

For a family of four flying from Islamabad and staying at mid-range hotels for five days, budget roughly PKR 380,000 to 470,000 in 2026. This covers return flights, a private 4x4 with driver, four hotel nights, food and entry fees. Travelling by road instead of flying can cut this by around a third.

What is the best time to visit Skardu?

Late May to early October is the main season. June to August is peak summer with every road open including Deosai. September is often the best overall month. Clear skies, fewer crowds, lower prices, and golden autumn colour in the Shigar and Khaplu orchards.

How do I reach Skardu from Islamabad?

Fly Islamabad to Skardu in about one hour with PIA, Airblue or AirSial, with fares roughly PKR 15,000 to 40,000 one way. Alternatively drive the Karakoram Highway via Chilas, an 18 to 22 hour journey normally split across two days. Flights depend on clear weather, so allow a buffer day.

Is Skardu safe for families and solo travellers?

Yes. Skardu is one of the most visited and tourism-developed parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, with regular flights, established hotels and a large local tourism economy. Standard mountain-travel precautions apply: check road and weather conditions and use a local driver for remote routes like Deosai and Basho.

Do I need a permit for Deosai National Park?

Pakistani nationals need only the standard park entry ticket bought at the gate. Foreign nationals should carry a passport and confirm current entry requirements before travel, as rules can change.

Which is better, Katpana or Sarfaranga cold desert?

Katpana is closer to Skardu city and quicker to visit. Sarfaranga has bigger dunes and jeep safaris, and hosts the annual jeep rally in August. If you only have time for one and want the full desert experience, choose Sarfaranga.

What is the cheapest way to visit Skardu?

Travel by road instead of flying, stay in budget guesthouses at around PKR 3,000 to 7,000 a night, visit in September rather than July or August, and share a hired vehicle. Together these can reduce total trip cost by roughly a third.

Do I need a 4x4 to visit Skardu?

Not for everything. A normal car reaches Kharpocho Fort, Shangrila, both Kachura lakes, Satpara Lake and Shigar Fort. A 4x4 is essential for Deosai National Park, the sand dunes and the final approach into Basho Valley.

What is the Skardu to Khaplu distance?

Khaplu is 103 km east of Skardu, about 2.5 to 3 hours on a mostly sealed road along the Shyok River. The return leg takes the same time.

What is the weather in Skardu today?

The live panel at the top of this page shows Skardu weather today, pulled fresh each time the page loads, alongside the Deosai plateau, which runs 10 to 15°C colder on the same day.

What are the famous things to buy in Skardu?

Dried apricots above all, plus apricot oil, walnuts, handwoven Pattu cloth, woollen shawls, Balti caps and gemstones. Dry fruit shops are on Alamdar Road and handicrafts in Chasma Bazaar.

Which hospitals in Skardu are open 24 hours?

Dolti Hospital, Hussain Memorial Hospital, Kuwait Medical Complex and the government RHQ hospital are open 24 hours, as is the A&E at CMH Skardu in Gamba. For an emergency call Rescue 1122.
