Travelling on a tighter budget? All three plans work from one of the cheap hotels in Skardu city rather than a lakeside resort; only the Khaplu and Shigar nights need a separate booking.
Choose your Skardu itinerary: 5, 7 or 10 days
Three plans built around the same principle: group destinations by direction so you are not crossing Skardu twice in a day, and put Deosai on day three so you have acclimatised first. Switch between them below.
4 nights, one hotel, no repacking. Covers the nine headline sights without a rushed day. This is the shortest trip that does not feel like a compromise — three days only covers what is close to the city.
Kharpocho Fort and the old town
Land, settle in, and walk up to Kharpocho in the late afternoon. The climb takes 20–30 minutes and the fort is the one place that makes the whole valley legible. Do not plan anything strenuous — you have gained altitude today.
Sealed road20–30 min climbKachura lakes and Soq Valley
Shangrila on Lower Kachura first, then Upper Kachura five minutes further. Where the road forks past Shangrila, the left branch climbs to Soq Valley — a 4x4 track rather than a road, but only 30 minutes and there are trout restaurants at the top.
4x4 for SoqHalf dayDeosai plateau and Sheosar Lake
The longest day of the trip. Leave by 7am. Satpara Lake at 9 km is where the sealed road ends — stop there on the way up rather than making a separate trip for it. Roughly three hours each way; budget the whole day. Bara Pani for the bear-watching odds, Sheosar as the turnaround. Nights near freezing even in August — take a proper jacket regardless of the town forecast.
4x4 essentialFull day4,250 mShigar Fort and Sarfaranga Cold Desert
Shigar Fort in the morning, an hour out on a sealed road. Then Sarfaranga in the afternoon for the dunes, jeep safari and ATVs — late afternoon gives the best light and the wind usually drops.
Sealed to ShigarHalf day eachManthokha, or fly out
If your flight is late or you are driving, Manthokha Waterfall in Kharmang is a 2.5–3 hour run each way. If flying, keep the morning clear — cancellations and reschedules are common.
Optional6 nights across three bases. The extra two days buy you Khaplu properly — an overnight rather than a six-hour round trip — plus Hushe Valley. One night in Shigar saves an hour of backtracking before the eastern leg.
Kharpocho Fort and the old town
Arrive, acclimatise, and climb Kharpocho in the late afternoon for the overview of the confluence.
Sealed roadKachura lakes and Soq Valley
Shangrila and Upper Kachura, then the left fork up to Soq Valley — 4x4 only, half an hour, and quieter than either lake.
4x4 for SoqHalf dayDeosai plateau and Sheosar Lake
Full day on the plateau. 7am start, Satpara Lake at 9 km where the sealed road ends, then three hours to Bara Pani and Sheosar. Do not attempt this on your arrival day.
4x4 essentialFull day4,250 mSarfaranga, then on to Shigar
Sarfaranga in the morning while the sand is cool, Shigar Fort in the afternoon, and stay in Shigar valley rather than driving back. Serena Shigar Fort and Khoj Resort are both good overnight options. It saves an hour tomorrow and the valley properties are the best part of staying outside the city.
Half day eachKhaplu Palace and Chaqchan Mosque
Three hours east along the Shyok. Khaplu Palace, the 1840 Yabgo residence restored by the Aga Khan Trust, then Chaqchan Mosque a short walk away. Stay in Khaplu — the round trip alone is six hours and a day visit wastes the place.
Sealed road103 kmHushe Valley, then back toward Skardu
Hushe sits at 3,180 m on a rougher road, two to three hours beyond Khaplu, and is the approach to Masherbrum and K6. Go up in the morning, drive back to Skardu in the afternoon.
4x43,180 mManthokha en route, or fly
Kharmang and Manthokha Waterfall if you are driving out, or a clear morning if you are flying.
Optional9 nights, everything, at a human pace. Adds Basho, Kharmang and a deliberate buffer day at the end. If you are flying, that spare day is the single most useful thing on this plan.
Kharpocho Fort and the old town
Arrive and acclimatise. Kharpocho late afternoon, nothing strenuous.
Sealed roadKachura lakes and Soq Valley
Shangrila, Upper Kachura, then the fork left up to Soq Valley on a 4x4 track. Trout at the top.
4x4 for SoqHalf dayDeosai plateau, Sheosar Lake, Bara Pani
The full plateau day, unhurried. With ten days you can also camp at Bara Pani rather than driving back — seasonal tented camps operate through July and August, and the night sky is the reason to do it.
4x4 essentialFull dayCamping optionalSarfaranga, Shigar Fort, stay in Shigar
Dunes in the morning, fort in the afternoon, and stay in the valley rather than backtracking.
Half day eachBasho Valley
Basho is meadow rather than mountain — around 45 km and roughly 2,900 m, with cold nights even in July. A rough jeep track in, and worth the day if you want somewhere with almost no one else in it.
4x42,900 mKhaplu Palace and Chaqchan Mosque
Three hours east. Palace, mosque, and a night in Khaplu rather than a six-hour round trip.
Sealed road103 kmHushe Valley
Up to Hushe at 3,180 m and back to Khaplu. The approach to Masherbrum, K6 and K7, and the Gondogoro route toward Concordia.
4x43,180 mDrive back, rest the afternoon
Three hours back to Skardu. Deliberately light — after a week of long days this is the one you will be grateful for.
Sealed roadKharmang: Manthokha and Khamosh
Manthokha is roadside, 55 m, about 80 km and 2.5–3 hours. Khamosh sits further up the valley and needs a short walk. Trout restaurants at both. A full day.
Full dayAny car to ManthokhaSpare day, or depart
Keep this free. Flights from Skardu cancel often enough that a buffer day is worth more than another sight — and if everything runs to plan, it is a morning at the bazaar or a second run at anything the weather spoiled.
BufferWork out what any of these would cost in our Skardu visit budget planner — it totals vehicle days, rooms, entry fees and activities for the destinations you pick.
Optional: Askole and the K2 trailhead
On the 10-day plan, if the buffer day goes unused, Askole is the furthest point most non-trekkers reach — roughly 130 km from Skardu via Shigar, and the last settlement before the Baltoro Glacier and the K2 Base Camp route.
The road is not sealed. It is a rough jeep track for a long stretch, six to eight hours each way, and needs a proper 4x4 with a driver who knows the route. That makes it a two-day commitment rather than a day trip. It is worth it if the trekking is why you came; for most visitors the buffer day is better kept as a buffer day. Book through a licensed operator — this is not a drive to improvise. Trekkers going on from Askole should read our K2 base camp trek guide for permits, costs and the route, and our guide to altitude sickness and acclimatization before planning daily ascent.
What to pack
Late afternoon is the right slot for the dune field at Sarfaranga — better light, cooler sand, less wind.
Pack for the plateau, not the town — Sheosar runs 12–16°C colder than Skardu on the same day.
Fill the tank before the Deosai day — there is no fuel anywhere on the plateau.
Leave room in your bag: dry fruit and shawls are what most visitors take home, and dry fruit is heavier than it looks.
good to know before you go: where the hospitals and pharmacies are, and what needs evacuation rather than local treatment.
Travelling alone? Our honest assessment of whether solo travel in Skardu is safe covers the risks that really matter here, which are altitude and roads rather than crime.
- An insulated jacket for the Deosai day, whatever the forecast in town
- Comfortable walking shoes, Kharpocho and the dunes both need proper footing
- High-factor sun protection and sunglasses for altitude UV
- Enough cash for the whole trip; withdraw in Islamabad
- Motion-sickness remedies, the Deosai track is winding
Frequently asked questions
Is 5 days enough for Skardu?
Yes. Five days comfortably covers nine major sights including a full day for Deosai, without feeling rushed. Three days covers only the sights close to the city.
What is the best 5 day Skardu itinerary?
Day 1 Kharpocho Fort, Day 2 the Kachura lakes and Soq Valley, Day 3 Satpara and a full day at Deosai, Day 4 Shigar Fort and Sarfaranga Cold Desert, Day 5 Manthokha Waterfall or departure. Grouping by direction avoids backtracking.
How much does a 5 day Skardu trip cost?
Roughly PKR 380,000 to 470,000 for a family of four flying from Islamabad at a mid-range hotel tier, covering flights, a private 4x4 with driver, four hotel nights, food and entry fees.
Do I need a 4x4 for a 5 day Skardu itinerary?
Yes for Day 3 (Deosai) and the dune safari on Day 4. Days 1, 2 and the Shigar Fort portion are all sealed roads a normal car handles. Some travellers hire a sedan and add a jeep only for the Deosai day.
Can I do this itinerary by road instead of flying?
Yes, but add two full travel days at each end for the Karakoram Highway drive from Islamabad, making it closer to a 9 day trip overall.
How many days do you need in Skardu?
Five days covers the nine headline sights without rushing. Seven adds Khaplu as an overnight plus Hushe Valley. Ten covers everything including Basho and Kharmang, with a buffer day at the end for flight disruption. Three days only covers what is close to the city.
What is a good 7 day Skardu itinerary?
Day 1 Kharpocho, Day 2 the Kachura lakes and Soq Valley, Day 3 a full day at Deosai, Day 4 Sarfaranga and Shigar Fort staying in Shigar, Day 5 Khaplu Palace and Chaqchan Mosque staying in Khaplu, Day 6 Hushe Valley then back to Skardu, Day 7 Manthokha or departure.
What is a good 10 day Skardu itinerary?
The 7-day route plus Basho Valley on Day 5, a second night in Khaplu for Hushe, a full day in Kharmang for Manthokha and Khamosh waterfalls, and a deliberate buffer day at the end. Flights from Skardu cancel often enough that the spare day is worth more than another sight.
How do I visit Soq Valley from Skardu?
Take the Shangrila road west. Past the resort the road forks: straight continues to Upper Kachura, left climbs to Soq Valley. It is about 23 km from Skardu and roughly 30 minutes from Shangrila, on a rough track that needs a 4x4. It fits neatly into the same day as both Kachura lakes.
Where should I stay on a 7 or 10 day Skardu trip?
Skardu city for most nights, one night in Shigar valley (Serena Shigar Fort or Khoj Resort) to avoid backtracking before the eastern leg, and one or two nights in Khaplu so it is not a six-hour round trip. On ten days you can also camp at Bara Pani on Deosai in July or August.
