Quick answer: the best month to visit Skardu
September is the best month to visit Skardu. Deosai is still open, the summer crowds have gone, hotel rates drop, the skies are clearest of the year, and the poplar and apricot orchards turn gold. July and August are warmer and greener but are the busiest and most expensive months, with the highest chance of flight delays.
- Best overall: September
- Best for Deosai wildflowers: late June to mid-July
- Best for autumn colour: late September to mid-October
- Best for blossom: April
- Avoid if you want Deosai: October to May, the road is closed
Best weather to visit Skardu
Wind matters more than temperature at Sarfaranga, where it peaks midday to late afternoon.
For conditions today rather than averages, see weather in Skardu right now.
The best weather to visit Skardu falls between June and early October, when daytime temperatures in town sit comfortably between 15°C and 27°C and the roads to every major attraction are open. Skardu sits in a rain shadow, so it is dry for most of the year. The valley's farming depends on glacial irrigation rather than rainfall.
The catch is altitude. Skardu town is at 2,228 metres, but Deosai is nearly 2,000 metres higher and runs 10–15°C colder on the same day. A warm afternoon in Skardu can still mean near-freezing conditions on the plateau, so pack layers regardless of the month.
Skardu weather month by month
Waterfalls are the exception to the June–September rule: Manthokha and Khamosh peak with the summer melt and drop off sharply by late September.

Best month to visit Deosai
The best month to visit Deosai National Park is July if you want wildflowers and the highest chance of seeing the Himalayan brown bear, or September if you want clearer air, firmer track conditions and far fewer vehicles.
Deosai is only reachable for roughly four months a year. The jeep track from Satpara Lake normally opens in early to mid June once the snow clears, and closes again around late September or early October with the first heavy snowfall. Outside that window the plateau is snowbound and the road is impassable. No operator will take you.
- Late June: road newly open, snow patches remain, fewest visitors
- July: wildflower peak, best bear sightings, muddiest track sections
- August: drier underfoot, warm, busiest month on the plateau
- Deosai in September: the clearest skies of the season and far fewer vehicles, but cold nights and a real risk the road closes late in the month. Confirm status locally before travelling.
Because opening dates follow snowmelt and shift by a week or two each year, confirm the road status locally if your dates fall in early June or late September. Full detail on the Deosai National Park guide.

Autumn in Skardu
Autumn in Skardu runs from mid-September through late October and is, for many returning visitors, the best time of year in the valley. The poplar avenues that line the irrigation channels turn a deep gold, the apricot and walnut orchards in Shigar and Khaplu follow, and the contrast against bare grey rock and the first snow on the high peaks is the single most photogenic combination Skardu produces.
Practical advantages of autumn beyond the colour: hotel rates fall noticeably after the August peak, flights are easier to book, the air is clearer so mountain views are sharper, and the harvest means fresh apricots, walnuts and apples are widely available. The trade-off is cold nights. Expect single digits in town and near-freezing at altitude, and the risk that Deosai closes partway through October.
If autumn colour is your priority, target the last week of September through the second week of October, and prioritise Shigar and Khaplu valleys where the orchard density is highest.
Autumn is also the quietest time at the lakes. Shangrila Resort and the Kachura lakes lose their summer coach parties from mid-September, and the surrounding poplars turn gold against the water.

Skardu in October
October is the second-best month to visit Skardu. Days run about 11–20°C, skies are mostly clear, and the autumn colour peaks in the first two weeks, especially in the Shigar and Khaplu orchards. Hotel rates are lower than in summer and the lakes are quiet.
The catch is access to the high ground. Deosai and Sheosar Lake drop below freezing at night and the plateau road can close at any point in the month, so if Deosai matters, go early in October. Season affects how you get there too: Babusar Pass closes with the snow, leaving only the Karakoram Highway from around October. For current conditions, see Skardu weather in October on our live weather page.
Skardu in November
November is the turn of the season. Daytime highs fall to roughly 4–13°C, nights drop below freezing, and the first significant snowfall usually arrives during the month. Deosai has already closed. Basho and the higher valleys are shutting or shut.
What November does offer is emptiness. The valley is quiet, hotel rates are at their lowest, and the last of the autumn colour lingers into the first week in the lower orchards. If you have already seen the headline sights and want Skardu without other visitors, it works. As a first visit it does not — you would be paying for a trip where most of the region is inaccessible.
Snowfall in Skardu
Snow falls in Skardu town from roughly November through March, with the heaviest and most reliable falls in January and February. The town itself gets moderate accumulation; the surrounding high valleys and Deosai get far more and hold it for months, which is what closes the roads.
Full month-by-month detail is on our Skardu snowfall season table. Skardu under snow is striking, and the cold desert dunes with a dusting on them are an unusual sight. But flights are cancelled more often in winter, many valley properties close, and the attractions most people come for are unreachable. See our Skardu weather page for current conditions.
The worst time to visit Skardu
Winter also has the highest flight-disruption rate of the year. See Islamabad to Skardu for why the route is so weather-dependent.
December through March is the hardest window for a first-time visitor. Deosai, Sarfaranga and Manthokha are inaccessible, many valley hotels close for the season, and the Islamabad–Skardu flight has its highest cancellation rate because the route depends on clear visual flight conditions through the mountains. Skardu town under snow is beautiful, but it suits repeat visitors who have already seen the headline sights rather than someone making the trip for the first time.
How the month affects your budget
Grouping sights by road matters as much as season. The Skardu distance map shows which ones share a route.
Season is one of the three biggest levers on what a Skardu trip costs. Flights and hotels both price up sharply for July and August, and heritage properties sell out weeks ahead. Shifting the same trip to September typically saves a meaningful share of total cost for near-identical access. Run your own numbers on the Skardu trip cost calculator, or compare hotel rates by tier.
