Quick answer
- Flight time: about 1 hour, roughly 290 km
- Airlines: PIA, Airblue and AirSial
- Ticket price: approximately PKR 15,000–40,000+ one way, economy
- By road: 18–22 hours via the Karakoram Highway and Chilas, normally split over two days
- Important: flights are weather-cancellable year-round. Allow a buffer day
How to reach Skardu: the two options
There are two ways in. You either fly — from Islamabad in about an hour, or direct from Lahore in roughly an hour and a half — or you drive the Karakoram Highway over two days. There is no rail link and no other airport within reach.
Flying in from abroad? Most international travelers connect through Islamabad; see how to get to Skardu from the USA for one-stop routes, the seasonal Dubai–Skardu flight, and the Pakistan e-visa for US citizens.
| By air | By road | |
|---|---|---|
| Time | ~1 hour | 18–22 hours, normally split over 2 days |
| Cost | PKR 15,000–40,000 one way | Fuel plus an overnight stop |
| Reliability | Weather-dependent, cancels often | Reliable, but landslide risk after rain |
| Best for | Trips under a week | Anyone with time who wants the journey |
Flying Islamabad to Skardu
Airlines and schedules

Three airlines operate the route, PIA, Airblue and AirSial, with roughly 20 or more flights a week in peak season. Flight time is about one hour, and departures are concentrated in the early morning, typically between around 6:00am and 10:30am.
That morning concentration is deliberate. Mountain weather deteriorates through the day, so early departures have materially better completion rates than later ones.
Islamabad to Skardu flight ticket price
| Situation | Typical one-way economy fare |
|---|---|
| Booked weeks or months ahead | From around PKR 15,000 |
| Mid-week departure, shoulder season | PKR 18,000–25,000 |
| Peak July–August | PKR 28,000–40,000 |
| Booked close to departure | PKR 40,000+ |
Fares on this route move more sharply with demand than most domestic Pakistani routes, because seat capacity is limited and summer demand compresses into a short season. Travelling in September rather than July or August usually saves meaningfully. See the best month to visit Skardu.
Why Islamabad–Skardu flights get cancelled

Why the route is weather-dependent

This matters medically too, serious cases are evacuated to Islamabad by air. See medical facilities in Skardu.
Flight disruption is one of several things worth planning around. See travelling safely in Skardu for the rest.
Skardu Airport operates largely under visual flight rules. Pilots need clear visibility through the mountain passes rather than relying purely on instrument approaches, so cloud or poor visibility at either end can ground the flight. This happens often enough that it should shape your planning rather than being treated as bad luck.
Practical mitigation:
- Take the earliest available departure, completion rates are better in the morning
- Build at least one buffer day into your itinerary at both ends
- Never schedule an international connection for the same day as your Skardu outbound
- Know the road option as a fallback
- Winter travel carries materially higher disruption risk than summer
Islamabad to Skardu by road
The overland route follows the Karakoram Highway north through Abbottabad and Besham to Chilas, then turns east onto the Skardu Road (S1) along the Indus gorge.
| Islamabad → Chilas | Roughly 10–12 hours; most travellers overnight here or in Besham |
| Chilas → Skardu | Roughly 7–9 hours along the Indus gorge |
| Total | 18–22 hours, normally split across two days |
| Vehicle | A well-maintained 4x4 or a hired vehicle with an experienced mountain driver |
The Skardu Road has been substantially upgraded, but sections remain vulnerable to landslides after heavy rain. Check conditions before departing rather than assuming a clear run. Attempting the drive in a single push is exhausting and not advisable.
Naran to Skardu and two road routes: KKH or Babusar Pass
Babusar Pass: checking…
Status is calculated from typical opening dates, not an official feed.
There is not one road to Skardu but two, and the choice matters more than most people realise. One is shorter, faster and far more scenic but shut for most of the year. The other is open year-round but currently in poor condition along a long stretch.
| Babusar Pass | Karakoram Highway | |
|---|---|---|
| Distance | ~580 km | ~685 km |
| Journey time | 15–18 hours | Longer, and unpredictable |
| Open | Early/mid June to late Oct–early Nov | Year-round |
| Route | Naran → Batakundi → Lulusar → Babusar Top → Chilas → Skardu | Abbottabad → Besham → Dassu → Chilas → Skardu |
| Road condition | Generally good when open | Poor from Dassu to just before Chilas |
| Main risks | Snow closure; altitude at the pass | Landslides; Diamer-Bhasha Dam construction traffic |
| Scenery | The best drive in Pakistan, arguably | Dramatic Indus gorge, but hard work |
| Vehicle | Sedan manages it when the pass is open | 4x4 recommended for the rough section |
When Babusar Pass opens and closes
Babusar Pass: checking…
| Period | Status | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Early to mid June | Opens | Clearing crews get through; the first traffic moves. Exact date moves with the snowpack. |
| Late June – September | Reliably open | The window most travellers use. Best conditions and best scenery. |
| October | Open but narrowing | Still passable, but early snowfall can shut it without much warning. |
| Late October to early November | Closes | Heavy snowfall shuts the pass for the season. |
| November – May | Closed | Karakoram Highway is the only road to Skardu. |
Those dates move every year. A heavy winter delays the June opening; an early snowfall brings the November closure forward. Neither is announced far ahead, so confirm before you drive to Naran expecting to continue over the top — plenty of people have had to turn back and take the long way round instead.
Why we would take Babusar when it is open
The Babusar route is not just shorter — it is a better journey in almost every respect during its brief season.
- Naran and the Kaghan Valley. The road runs the length of one of Pakistan's most celebrated valleys rather than skirting it
- Batakundi. A natural overnight stop, and the point where the landscape opens into alpine meadow
- Lulusar Lake. Sits directly on the route at around 3,410 m, and is worth stopping for rather than driving past
- Babusar Top at 4,173 m. The pass itself, with views over the Kaghan valley on one side and toward Nanga Parbat on the other
- 15 to 18 hours from Islamabad, which is realistically a long day plus one overnight rather than two full driving days
If your dates fall between mid June and mid October, this is the route to take.
Current condition of the Karakoram Highway. The stretch from Dassu to just before Chilas is in poor condition. A 4x4 is recommended if you are driving your own vehicle. A sedan can physically do it, but it is not the ideal choice given the current surface — expect a slow, uncomfortable section and real wear on the car.
Two other factors make KKH timings unpredictable: landslide risk, which is worst after rain, and construction traffic around the Diamer-Bhasha Dam, which can add substantial delays. Budget more time than the distance suggests, and avoid driving that section after dark.
When the Karakoram Highway is still the right call
Outside the Babusar window — roughly October through June — the KKH is not a preference, it is the only road. It is also the sensible choice if the pass has not yet opened, if heavy rain has been forecast for the Kaghan side, or if anyone in your party is uneasy about a 4,173 m pass.
Check current conditions before you commit either way. Our Skardu weather page gives live conditions at the Skardu end, and a licensed operator will know the current state of both roads better than anything published online.
Driving yourself, a rented seat, or a private car
| Option | Roughly what it costs | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Your own sedan | PKR 18,000–24,000 per leg in fuel and tolls on the KKH, less via Babusar, plus two overnight stops | Three or more people; cheapest per head |
| Rented seat, shared van | PKR 9,000–13,000 per person, one way | Solo travellers and couples |
| Private hired car | Charged per vehicle for the whole journey, roughly PKR 20,000 per leg | Families wanting to stop when they like |
Where the crossover falls. A shared seat costs about PKR 11,000 per person each way, while driving your own sedan costs roughly PKR 21,000 per leg regardless of how many are in it. So seats are cheaper for one or two people, and your own vehicle wins from three upward — before you even count the freedom to stop where you like.
Shared vans sell seats individually and run from Rawalpindi, which makes them the cheapest way in for one or two people. The trade-off is departure times you do not control and stops you do not choose. Work out both options for your party size in our Skardu visit budget planner.
Fly or drive? A straight comparison
| Your situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Under 7 days total | Fly, the drive alone consumes four of your days |
| Want the journey to be part of the trip | Drive one way, fly the other |
| Travelling with young children or elderly relatives | Fly |
| Flights fully booked or grounded | Road is the reliable fallback |
| Tight budget | Drive, see the cost calculator |
The view from the plane
What you see from the window

On a clear day this is one of the more spectacular short-haul flights anywhere. Depending on routing, Nanga Parbat (8,126 m) is visible along with the western Karakoram. There is no consistently correct side of the aircraft since the approach path varies, but a window seat is worth requesting regardless. The descent into the Skardu valley along the Indus is memorable in itself.
Arriving at Skardu Airport
Baggage allowance matters on the way out if you plan to buy dry fruit or handicrafts.

There is no jet bridge. You walk down airstairs onto the tarmac, which is the first thing that tells you this is not a normal domestic airport. The terminal is small and single-storey, baggage comes out quickly, and you are outside within fifteen minutes of landing.
Getting into the city: Skardu International (KDU) sits close to the town, so the transfer is short. Taxis wait outside arrivals and the fare is negotiated rather than metered — agree it before you get in. If you have booked accommodation, most hotels will arrange a pickup, which is usually easier than negotiating on arrival with luggage.
Departing: arrive early. Flights out cluster in the morning for the same weather reason they arrive then, and the terminal is small enough that a full flight fills it. Confirm your flight is operating before you set off — see current conditions.
Skardu International (KDU) is small and has no public transport link to the city. Book airport pickup in advance through your hotel. Most offer it free if you share your flight number. Given that flights shift with weather, share the flight number rather than just a time. See where to stay in Skardu for properties offering transfers.
From the airport, most sights are an hour or less away. Our Skardu map with road distances shows how far each place is from the city and which ones share a road.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the flight from Islamabad to Skardu?
About one hour, covering roughly 290 km. Flights are operated by PIA, Airblue and AirSial, mostly departing early morning.
How much is an Islamabad to Skardu flight ticket?
Roughly PKR 15,000 to 40,000 or more one way in economy, depending on how far ahead you book and the season. Booking well before peak summer secures the lower end.
Why do Islamabad to Skardu flights get cancelled so often?
Skardu Airport operates largely under visual flight rules, so pilots need clear visibility through the mountain passes. Cloud or poor visibility at either end grounds the flight. Always build in a buffer day.
How long does it take to drive from Islamabad to Skardu?
Roughly 18 to 22 hours via the Karakoram Highway and Chilas, normally split across two days with an overnight stop. Attempting it in one push is not advisable.
Is it better to fly or drive to Skardu?
Fly if your trip is under a week, the drive consumes four days round trip. Drive if you have time and want the Karakoram Highway scenery, or as a fallback when flights are grounded.
How do I reach Skardu?
Two ways: fly from Islamabad in about an hour, or drive the Karakoram Highway in 18 to 22 hours split over two days. There is no rail link and no other airport within reach.
Which road route is better to Skardu, Babusar Pass or the Karakoram Highway?
The Karakoram Highway is about 685 km and open year-round. Babusar Pass is shorter at roughly 580 km and far more scenic, but the pass sits at 4,173 m and is snow-closed for most of the year, typically open from early to mid June and closing again in late October or early November. Confirm locally before relying on it.
How much is a seat in a shared van from Islamabad to Skardu?
Roughly PKR 9,000 to 13,000 per person one way. Shared vans sell seats individually and run from Rawalpindi, making them the cheapest option for one or two people. You do not control departure times or stops.
How much does it cost to drive to Skardu in your own car?
Roughly PKR 18,000 to 24,000 per leg in fuel and tolls on the Karakoram Highway, and less via the shorter Babusar route. Add two overnight stops each way. Driving yourself is cheaper than shared seats once you have three or more people.
What is the condition of the Karakoram Highway to Skardu?
The stretch from Dassu to just before Chilas is currently in poor condition. A 4x4 is recommended for your own vehicle; a sedan can manage it but is not ideal. Landslide risk and construction traffic around the Diamer-Bhasha Dam also make timings unpredictable.
How long does the Babusar Pass route take from Islamabad to Skardu?
Roughly 15 to 18 hours via Naran, Batakundi, Lulusar Lake and Babusar Top, covering about 580 km. That is realistically a long day plus one overnight rather than two full driving days. The pass usually opens in early to mid June and closes in late October or early November.
Do I need a 4x4 to drive to Skardu?
For the Karakoram Highway, a 4x4 is recommended because of the poor surface between Dassu and Chilas. A sedan can do it but will be slow and uncomfortable. Via Babusar Pass, when open, a sedan manages the route without difficulty.
What is worth stopping for on the Babusar route?
Naran and the Kaghan Valley, Batakundi where the landscape opens into alpine meadow, Lulusar Lake at around 3,410 m directly on the route, and Babusar Top itself at 4,173 m with views toward Nanga Parbat.
When does Babusar Pass open and close?
Babusar Pass usually opens in early to mid June once the snow is cleared, and closes again in late October or early November with the first heavy snowfall. Both dates shift each year with the snowpack, so confirm locally before relying on the route.
What is Skardu airport like?
Skardu International (KDU) is small and single-storey with no jet bridge — you walk down airstairs onto the tarmac with the Karakoram directly ahead. Baggage comes out quickly and you are usually outside within fifteen minutes of landing.
How do I get from Skardu airport to the city?
The airport sits close to town, so the transfer is short. Taxis wait outside arrivals and fares are negotiated rather than metered — agree the price before getting in. Most hotels will arrange a pickup, which is easier than negotiating on arrival with luggage.
Are there direct flights from Lahore to Skardu?
Yes. PIA and Airblue both operate direct Lahore to Skardu flights, roughly 8 to 10 a week, taking about 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 30 minutes. Departures generally fall between 06:00 and 12:30. Fares run higher than from Islamabad.
Are there direct flights from Karachi to Skardu?
We could not confirm a scheduled direct Karachi to Skardu service. Direct flights from Karachi are described as rare, with most itineraries routing via Islamabad or Lahore. Check any advertised direct service is actually operating before booking around it.
