Distances are straight-line from the city centre (35.29°N, 75.64°E); road distance is longer. Rates are 2026 planning estimates reviewed August 2026 — where we could not verify a current rate we say so rather than guess. Confirm directly before booking. See our sources and methodology.
Choose the area before you choose the hotel
Staying in the city puts you within walking distance of Chasma Bazaar and the dry fruit shops, which the valley properties do not.
Khaplu is the fourth option, three hours east, and only makes sense on a longer trip. See what there is to do in Khaplu before committing a night to it.
Basing yourself in Shigar Valley also puts you closest to Sarfaranga Cold Desert, which is best visited at sunset, awkward to reach from Skardu city if you want to stay for the light.
This is the mistake most first-time visitors make. Skardu's attractions are spread across a wide valley, so where you sleep decides how much of each day you spend in a vehicle. A lakeside room is lovely, but it adds 30 to 45 minutes to every single outing. Including the pre-dawn start for Deosai.
| Area | Best for | Trade-off | Typical rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skardu city | Airport access, Deosai starts, restaurants | Less scenic | PKR 5,000–20,000 |
| Kachura / lakeside | Dawn and dusk lake access | 30–45 min from everything | PKR 7,000–35,000 |
| Shigar Valley | Heritage, orchards, quiet | 1 hour from the city | PKR 18,000–30,000 |
| Near airport | Early flights, late arrivals | Functional, not scenic | PKR 6,500–15,000 |
For most itineraries, Skardu city is the right default, with one night at a lakeside or heritage property as an experience in itself.
Luxury and heritage hotels in Skardu
How we source prices. Rates are planning estimates gathered from publicly listed and official sources, last reviewed August 2026, converted at roughly PKR 283 to US$1. They move with season, room type and availability. Confirm directly with the property before booking. (our sourcing) Licensed hotels file rate lists with DTS, so you can also ask what the registered rate is (how to check).
Serena Shigar Fort — the best hotel in Skardu
≈ PKR 22,000–30,000 per night. A 17th-century Raja's fort-palace in Shigar Valley, restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and run as a roughly 20-room heritage guesthouse. Walnut floors, hand-carved window lattices, a museum courtyard and a cherry orchard. Rooms are historic rather than modern-luxury in finish, which is the point. Consistently the highest-rated stay in the region. Note the practical catch: original buildings mean stairs, narrow doorways and low lintels, so it is not the right choice for anyone with mobility limitations.
Shangrila Resort, Lower Kachura Lake
≈ PKR 35,000+ per night. Skardu's original resort, opened in 1983, with cottages set directly on the heart-shaped lake and a restaurant built inside an aircraft fuselage. Guest reviews are consistently split: the setting draws near-universal praise, room condition relative to price draws consistent criticism. The sensible approach is one night for the dawn and dusk lake access, rather than using it as a whole-trip base. See Lower Kachura Lake in the main guide.
Not staying overnight? Day visitors pay an entry fee instead; current fees, room rates and the best time to go are in our Shangrila Resort Skardu guide.
Five-star city hotels
≈ PKR 28,000+ per night. Full-service properties in Skardu city with airport shuttles, conference facilities and restaurants. Less atmospheric than the heritage options but far more practical if you have early Deosai departures or are travelling with a large family.

Mid-range hotels in Skardu
This tier is where most family trips should land. You get reliable hot water, backup power, an on-site restaurant and secure parking without heritage pricing.
- Skardu city 3–4 star hotels, ≈ PKR 15,000/night. Reliable Wi-Fi, restaurant, private parking. The sweet spot for most itineraries.
- Boutique valley stays, Shigar, ≈ PKR 18,000/night. Riverside rooms a short walk from Shigar Fort, with orchard views.
- Lakeview hotels, Kachura, ≈ PKR 16,000/night. Direct views over the Kachura lakes, popular with honeymooners.
Khoj Resort, Shigar
Of the newer riverside properties that have opened in Shigar valley, Khoj Resort is the one worth knowing about. It sits directly above the Indus with the Karakoram wall opposite, and the setting is the point. Cabin-style rooms and terraces angled at the river and mountains rather than inward at a courtyard.
Khoj Resorts Shigar · Jarba Zhou Rd, Shigar valley · +92 311 1555448 · 12.3 km from Skardu centre · Get directions

It is positioned as a luxury stay by Shigar standards, and it functions as more than accommodation: the restaurant and terrace are a good stop for breakfast or a meal while visiting Shigar, whether or not you are staying the night. Given how limited eating options are once you leave Skardu city, that matters more than it sounds.

Practical notes: the valley setting means you are roughly an hour from Skardu city, which is the usual trade-off discussed above. Excellent for a night built around Shigar Fort and the cold desert at Sarfaranga, less convenient if your itinerary is centred on Deosai and the early starts it requires.

Note on rates: we have not verified 2026 nightly pricing for this property, so no figure is listed above. Contact the resort directly for current rates and availability, particularly for July and August.
The two questions to ask before booking
A third worth adding: is the property licensed? Hotels in Gilgit-Baltistan must hold a DTS licence and file their rate lists with the department. See how to check a hotel is registered.
1. Is there a backup generator? Skardu has periodic power fluctuation. 2. Is hot water available in the evening? These two answers predict guest satisfaction better than star rating does, at every price point.
When to book
Hotel restaurants are convenient but rarely the best food in town — see where to eat in Skardu.
Licensed hotels file their rate lists with DTSGB, so a registered property's displayed rate is not invented on the spot.

Stayed somewhere recently? Share the rate you really paid, hotel pricing here moves faster than any guide can track.
For July and August, book several weeks ahead. Heritage properties have very few rooms and sell out first. September and June are usually bookable two to three weeks out at better rates, which is one more reason September is the best month to visit Skardu. Many valley properties close entirely in winter.
Accommodation is typically the largest controllable line in a Skardu budget. Dropping one tier usually saves a quarter to a third of total trip cost. Model it on the trip cost calculator.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the best hotel to stay in Skardu?
Serena Shigar Fort is generally considered the best hotel in Skardu, a restored 17th-century palace in Shigar Valley at roughly PKR 22,000 to 30,000 per night. For city convenience and value, a 3 to 4 star Skardu city hotel at around PKR 15,000 is the more practical choice.
How much do hotels in Skardu cost per night?
In 2026, budget guesthouses run roughly PKR 4,000 to 8,000, mid-range city hotels PKR 12,000 to 20,000, and heritage or resort properties PKR 22,000 to 35,000 or more per night during the June to September peak season.
Where is the best area to stay in Skardu?
Skardu city suits most trips because it is closest to the airport, the Deosai road and restaurants. Lakeside Kachura is worth one or two nights for early morning lake access, and Shigar Valley suits travellers prioritising heritage and quiet.
Is Shangrila Resort worth the price?
For one night, most travellers say yes for the lakeside setting. Reviews are consistently candid that room finishes do not match the price point above PKR 35,000, so it works better as a single-night experience than a whole-trip base.
Do Skardu hotels have reliable electricity and hot water?
It varies significantly between properties. Ask directly whether the hotel has a backup generator and whether hot water is available in the evening before you book. These two factors predict guest satisfaction more reliably than star rating.
Are there good family hotels in Skardu?
Yes. Mid-range city hotels are best suited to families, offering triple and family rooms, on-site restaurants and parking. Heritage forts are atmospheric but have limited room configurations and stair access.
