Sources & Methodology

Where each number on this site comes from, how often it is checked, and what its limits are — so you can verify us rather than trust us.

The short version

  1. Distances are road distances cross-checked against mapping data, not straight-line
  2. Prices are planning estimates from public listings, last reviewed August 2026
  3. Weather is live from Open-Meteo, pulled separately for Skardu town and Deosai
  4. Official rules and permits are cited to the government body that issues them
  5. Photography is our own, taken on the ground in Baltistan
  6. We publish what we cannot verify as unverified, rather than guessing

Why this page exists

Most travel sites make confident claims and never say where the numbers came from. That is fine until a number is wrong, and travellers plan around it. This page sets out where each type of information on this site comes from, how often it is checked, and what its limits are. If you find something that contradicts it, tell us.

Distances and driving times

What we publishRoad distance in km and typical driving time
SourceCross-checked against mapping data and operator route information
Reference pointSkardu city centre, 35.29°N 75.64°E
Last reviewedAugust 2026
Known limitsDriving times vary with road condition, weather, traffic through town and the vehicle. Times assume a competent local driver and daylight.

Where we give a straight-line distance rather than a road distance, we say so on the page. The facility distances on our medical facilities page are straight-line and labelled as such.

Hotel and transport prices

What we publishTypical nightly rates by tier, and daily vehicle hire rates
SourcePublicly listed rates from property and booking listings, plus rates quoted by local operators
CurrencyPakistani Rupees, converted at roughly PKR 283 to US$1 where dollars are shown
Last reviewedAugust 2026
Known limitsRates move with season, room type, availability and negotiation. July and August cost substantially more than September.

A verification route most travellers do not know about: licensed hotels in Gilgit-Baltistan must file rate lists with the Directorate of Tourist Services as part of their licence. If a licensed property quotes you something very different from its displayed rate, you can ask what the registered rate is. See licensed operators and hotels.

We do not accept payment for placement, and no property has paid to appear on this site. How the site is funded is set out in our advertising and affiliate disclosure.

Weather data

What we publishLive current conditions and a 7-day forecast
SourceOpen-Meteo, an open weather data service
UpdatedOn every page load — the figures you see are current, not cached
Two locationsSkardu town (2,228 m) and the Deosai plateau (4,114 m) are queried separately
Known limitsModel data, not a station reading. Mountain weather is local and changes fast.

The two-location approach matters: Deosai typically runs 10–15°C colder than Skardu on the same day, and a single town forecast misleads people into underpacking.

Seasonal and road-status information

What we publishOpening seasons, month-by-month conditions, and a calculated Deosai status indicator
SourceEstablished seasonal patterns combined with live weather
Known limitsNot an official road report. No machine-readable official feed exists for Deosai road status. Our indicator is calculated, not authoritative.
What to doConfirm current road status with a local driver or the relevant authority before setting out

Official rules, licensing and permits

Anything on this site describing what the law or a government body requires is cited to that body directly, so you can check it rather than take our word for it:

Conservation and scientific claims

Where we state a figure from research rather than observation, the source is named on the page. Our Deosai guide is the clearest example: brown bear population figures vary considerably between surveys, so we cite the UNDP-supported Deosai Brown Bear Project alongside more recent Gilgit-Baltistan Wildlife Department figures and peer-reviewed literature, and state the range rather than picking the most impressive number.

Medical and health information

Facility names, addresses, coordinates and contact numbers on the medical facilities page come from Google Places data, cross-checked against public listings. We do not rate or rank facilities.

Altitude and health content is general travel information, not medical advice. Where local knowledge corrects published data, we apply the correction and note it.

Photography

All photographs are our own, taken on the ground in Baltistan, unless a caption says otherwise, and each carries a visible watermark. Maps, diagrams and the altitude profile are original work. We do not use stock imagery of places we have not been.

What we do not do

  • We do not invent numbers. Where a figure could not be verified, we say the sources conflict and give the range. Published heights for Khamosh Waterfall vary between roughly 30 m and 60 m, and our Kharmang page says exactly that rather than picking one.
  • We do not copy hotel descriptions from booking sites or property marketing.
  • We do not accept payment for placement or removal of any listing or criticism.
  • We do not publish reviews we cannot attribute to a real visit.

Corrections

Corrections are read by a person and applied quickly. Reports from travellers who have recently been on the ground carry more weight than anything we can check from a desk, and they go to the front of the queue.

Two ways to send one: the contact page, or the tourist experiences form if you want to share a full trip report.

This page was last updated on 31 August 2026. If it contradicts something published elsewhere on this site, this page is the one we intend to be correct, and the other page needs fixing — please tell us.

Frequently asked questions

Where do your distances come from?

Road distances cross-checked against mapping data and operator route information, measured from Skardu city centre at 35.29°N, 75.64°E. Where we give a straight-line distance instead, the page says so.

How current are your hotel prices?

Rates are planning estimates from publicly listed sources, last reviewed August 2026 and reviewed at least twice a year. They move with season, room type and availability, so confirm directly with the property before booking.

Is your Deosai open/closed indicator official?

No. It is calculated from seasonal patterns and live weather, because no machine-readable official road-status feed exists. Always confirm with a local driver before setting out.

Do businesses pay to appear on this site?

No. No hotel, operator or transport company can pay for placement, a higher ranking, or removal of criticism. The site is funded by display advertising and affiliate commission, which is disclosed in full on our disclaimer page.

What do you do when sources disagree?

We publish the range and say the sources conflict. Published heights for Khamosh Waterfall vary between roughly 30 and 60 metres, so our Kharmang page states that rather than choosing one figure.

How do I report an error?

Use the contact page, or submit a full trip report through the tourist experiences form. Corrections from recent visitors are prioritised and usually applied within a few days.
