K2 base camp trek itinerary, day by day

Every K2 base camp trek starts in Skardu. From there a jeep takes you through the Shigar valley to Askole, the last village with a road, about 80 miles (130 km) and six to eight hours on a rough track. On foot, the route follows the Braldu river to the snout of the Baltoro Glacier, then runs up the glacier for several days to Concordia, where the Baltoro and Godwin-Austen glaciers meet. K2 base camp is a further stage beyond. There are no villages, shops or lodges after Askole; everything is carried in by porters.

Pro tip: budget a spare day in Skardu at each end. When the weather socks in, the Islamabad flight doesn't go, and a missed flight home is an expensive way to end a bucket-list trek.

With a rest day at Paiju and a spare day at Concordia for weather, the walk from Askole to K2 base camp and back takes 10 to 13 days. Add a day each way for Skardu and a buffer for the Islamabad–Skardu flight, which cancels in bad weather, and you reach the 14–21 days most operators sell. Our Islamabad to Skardu guide explains the flight and the two-day road alternative.

Before the drive to Askole, most groups spend a night or two in Skardu or Shigar. The Shigar Fort and the valley's "Land of K2" sign are on the way, and a short Askole and K2 trailhead section in our itinerary covers the road.

How much does the K2 base camp trek cost? Real 2026 numbers

A guided K2 base camp trek from Islamabad costs roughly $1,500–3,000 per person in 2026. One Skardu-based operator lists a 21-day, all-inclusive trip at $1,790, rising to $2,090 for July and August departures (Apricot Tours price list). Group size, whether you fly or drive to Skardu, and how many spare days are built in make most of the difference. From the US, international flights and insurance usually take the total to roughly $3,000–5,000.

K2 base camp permits and visa: the paperwork people get wrong

The Baltoro is a restricted zone, which is the single biggest difference from treks elsewhere in Pakistan. Skardu, Shigar, Khaplu and Deosai need no permit; the route beyond Askole does.

  1. Book with a licensed operator. Foreigners cannot trek beyond Askole independently. Check any operator against the official Gilgit-Baltistan register first: our guide to DTSGB-licensed operators shows how.
  2. Get a letter of invitation. Your operator issues it for the visa application.
  3. Apply for the right visa. Pakistan's online visa system has a separate mountaineering and trekking category. Operators say the K2, Baltoro and Gondogoro La routes need it rather than a plain tourist visa, and that approval can take about four weeks because of security clearance. Apply at least six to eight weeks before you fly.
  4. Your operator gets the trekking permit. It is arranged before the trek and checked at the Askole checkpoint. Keep several passport photocopies and printed copies of your visa for checkpoints on the road.

Fees for the permit and the Central Karakoram National Park have changed several times since 2023, and figures published online conflict. A 2024 fee list from one operator gives $150 per person per month for restricted-zone treks plus a $50 environment fee (Trango Adventure); a 2026 price sheet lists $150 plus a $190 park fee. Ask your operator for the current figures in writing; they are normally included in the package price.

Best time for the K2 base camp trek (and when to skip it)

The season runs from mid-June to September. July and August have the most settled weather on the glacier and the busiest camps; they are also the summit months for K2 and Broad Peak expeditions, so base camp is at its liveliest. Late June and September are quieter and colder at night. Dawn reported more than 2,200 foreign climbers and trekkers in Gilgit-Baltistan between April and August 2026, and that trekking to K2 base camp continues until October (Dawn, 2026). From November to May the route is snowbound and closed to trekking.

For what the weather does in Skardu itself, month by month, see the best month to visit Skardu and our Skardu weather page.

How hard is the K2 base camp trek? An honest reality check

This is a demanding trek, not a technical climb. Days are six to eight hours on loose moraine, with some glacier walking and cold river crossings, and you sleep above 13,120 ft (4,000 m) for about a week. Previous multi-day hiking, good boots you have already worn in, and comfort with basic camping matter more than raw fitness.

Altitude is the main medical risk. The route gains height gradually, but K2 base camp is over 16,400 ft (5,000 m), and altitude illness can affect fit, young trekkers as readily as anyone. Know the signs of acute mountain sickness and the two emergencies, HACE and HAPE, before you go. Our high altitude guide and altitude sickness calculator covers the symptoms, the Lake Louise score and when to descend, and hospitals in Skardu lists where care is available before and after the trek.

Helicopter rescue and insurance: read this before you pay a deposit

There is no civilian mountain rescue service in the Karakoram. Helicopter rescue is flown by Pakistan Army Aviation through Askari Aviation, its commercial arm, and it only flies if payment is guaranteed in advance, normally through your operator by a deposit or bank guarantee. Deposits have historically run into five figures: $12,000–15,000 in 2018, with flying time of about $3,000 an hour and a two-helicopter policy over glaciers (UKClimbing). Rescue also depends on helicopters being free from military duties and on the weather.

Before you pay a deposit, ask your operator in writing: is a helicopter rescue guarantee lodged in my name with Askari Aviation, and what happens if I need it? Budget operators sometimes skip this, which leaves an injured trekker with a multi-day carry out.

For US travelers, insurance needs three specific checks:

  • Altitude limit. Many standard policies cap trekking altitude well below 16,400 ft (5,000 m). You need cover to at least 17,000 ft (5,200 m) for K2 base camp, or about 18,400 ft (5,600 m) if you return over Gondogoro La.
  • Travel advisory exclusions. The State Department rates Pakistan Level 3, "Reconsider travel" (current advisory). Some US policies exclude or limit cover in Level 3 or Level 4 countries. Gilgit-Baltistan is not one of the Level 4 areas, but check the wording.
  • Helicopter evacuation. Confirm the policy pays for helicopter rescue, not just medical treatment, and consider a separate rescue membership, which operators in Pakistan often recommend alongside insurance.

Our safety guide for Americans explains what the advisory covers, where the Level 4 areas are, and how to reach the US Embassy in Islamabad.

K2 base camp vs Everest base camp: which bucket-list trek is tougher?

Both reach about the same height, but they are different trips. Everest base camp is a lodge-to-lodge walk through villages. K2 base camp is a camping expedition on a glacier, with no villages for over a week, far fewer people, and what many trekkers consider the finest mountain scenery anywhere: Concordia sits among four of the world's fourteen 8,000-meter peaks: K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I and Gasherbrum II.

Gondogoro La: the epic (and harder) way back

Instead of walking back down the Baltoro, some groups cross Gondogoro La, a pass of about 18,320 ft (5,585 m), and descend to Hushe village in the Khaplu valley. It makes a loop and gives famous views of K2 and the Gasherbrums from the top, but it is a serious undertaking: a pre-dawn climb on fixed ropes, snow conditions that close it some weeks, and extra altitude. Only do it with an operator who fixes the ropes and has a turn-back plan. The descent ends in the Hushe valley above Khaplu, a drive of several hours back to Skardu.

The American story on K2 and the Gilkey Memorial

K2 has a long American connection. American expeditions attempted the mountain in 1938, 1939 and 1953. On the 1953 attempt, climber Art Gilkey fell ill high on the mountain and was lost in an avalanche during the descent. His teammates built a stone cairn in his memory near base camp. That cairn, the Gilkey Memorial, now carries plates for many climbers who have died on K2, and most trekkers walk up to it. The first Americans reached the summit in 1978.

Skardu is still where every K2 expedition, American or otherwise, begins. Climbers fly in, buy last supplies in the bazaar and drive to Askole along the same road as trekkers.

K2 base camp trek FAQs

How much does the K2 base camp trek cost?

A guided trek from Islamabad costs roughly $1,500–3,000 per person in 2026, usually including Skardu transfers, the jeep to Askole, guide, porters, food, tents and permits. International flights from the US (from about $1,000), insurance and tips are extra.

How long is the K2 base camp trek?

The walk from Askole to K2 base camp and back takes 10–13 days. Most packages run 14–21 days from Islamabad, which allows for the Skardu flight, the jeep drive to Askole and buffer days for weather.

Do I need a permit for K2 base camp?

Yes. The Baltoro Glacier is a restricted zone. Your licensed operator arranges the trekking permit, and you need the mountaineering and trekking category of the Pakistan e-visa, supported by the operator's letter of invitation.

Can I trek to K2 base camp without a guide?

No. Foreigners must go through a licensed Pakistani operator beyond Askole, which in practice means a guide, cook and porter team. You can book a private trip rather than joining a group.

How high is K2 base camp?

K2 base camp is at about 16,850 ft (5,135 m). Concordia, where most treks spend a night or two, is at about 15,090 ft (4,600 m). K2 itself is 28,251 ft (8,611 m), the second-highest mountain in the world.

What is the best time for the K2 base camp trek?

Mid-June to September. July and August are the most popular months and the K2 summit season; late June and September are quieter and colder. The route is closed by snow from November to May.

Is K2 base camp harder than Everest base camp?

Most trekkers find it harder. The altitude is similar, but the K2 route means camping on a glacier for over a week, rougher terrain and no villages or lodges after Askole. It is also much quieter.

Is helicopter rescue available on the K2 base camp trek?

Yes, but only if a payment guarantee is in place beforehand. Rescue is flown by Pakistan Army Aviation through Askari Aviation, usually guaranteed by your operator through a deposit or bank guarantee. Confirm this in writing and carry insurance that covers helicopter evacuation above 5,000 m.

Where does the K2 base camp trek start?

In Askole, a village about 80 miles (130 km) and 6–8 hours by jeep from Skardu. Most trekkers fly from Islamabad to Skardu, spend a night there, then drive to Askole.

Is the K2 base camp trek safe for Americans?

Gilgit-Baltistan is not one of the Level 4 "Do not travel" areas in the US travel advisory for Pakistan, which is Level 3 overall. The practical risks on this trek are altitude, glacier terrain, weather and distance from help, which is why a licensed operator, a rescue guarantee and the right insurance matter.
