Quick answer

- Best time of day: late afternoon, for golden hour on the dunes

A genuine desert at altitude

Sarfaranga sits where the Shigar and Indus rivers meet, and it is a real desert in the geological sense. Wind-deposited dune fields, not a gravel patch dressed up for photographs. What makes it unusual is the altitude. At roughly 2,300 metres, with snow-capped Karakoram peaks on the skyline behind the sand, Sarfaranga is among the highest cold deserts in the world.
Why there is sand at 2,300 metres

The sand is glacial in origin. Meltwater carries finely ground rock flour down from the Karakoram, deposits it across the wide valley floor, and persistent up-valley winds rework it into dune forms. That is why the sand behaves oddly. Hot underfoot in direct sun, really cold within an hour of sunset.
The Sarfaranga Jeep Rally
Timing around the jeep rally
Held annually in August, the Sarfaranga Jeep Rally has grown into one of Pakistan's largest off-road motorsport events, drawing teams from across the country. If you enjoy motorsport it is a genuine spectacle and a reason to time a trip deliberately.
If you want the quiet desert experience, it is equally a reason to check the dates and avoid that week. Accommodation across Skardu tightens noticeably during the event and the dunes close to casual visitors during racing.

Two short clips from the dune field. Both are silent — the wind out there drowns out everything anyway, and muted video is what plays reliably on a phone.
Skardu desert safari at Sarfaranga: activities and prices
The jeep safari is the reason most people come, and it is arranged on site rather than booked ahead. Local drivers wait at the edge of the dune field with modified 4x4s and take you out over the crests for a run of roughly 20 to 40 minutes.
| Activity | Typical price | Roughly how long | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jeep dune safari | ~PKR 12,000 per vehicle | About 20 minutes | Rough by design; drivers crest steep faces at speed |
| Quad bike / ATV | ~PKR 8,000 per ride | Short | Rides are brief for the money. Check the machine and whether a helmet is offered. |
| Paragliding / motor gliding | ~PKR 15,000 per person | Short flight | Seasonal and wind-dependent. Confirm it is running before travelling for it. |
| Horse riding | Modest, per person | Short loop | Near the entrance; the gentlest option here |
Note on sandboarding: it is often listed for Sarfaranga online, but it is not actually available here. The activities that do run are the jeep dune safari, quad bikes, horse riding and — seasonally — paragliding.
These are expensive relative to everything else on a Skardu trip, and visitors regularly say so. A twenty-minute jeep run costs roughly what a night in a mid-range hotel does. Prices are negotiated and cash only, and none of it is included in a standard vehicle hire.
Agree the price and the duration before you get in. The most common complaint here is a ride that felt far shorter than expected for the money.
Motor gliding at Sarfaranga
Motor gliding runs from the flat ground at Sarfaranga during parts of the season, giving a short flight over the dune field with the Karakoram behind. It is the one activity here that is genuinely hard to find elsewhere in Pakistan.
It does not operate continuously. Availability depends on the operator being present, wind conditions and the time of year, and it is often tied to the busier summer weeks and event periods. We have no reliably verified 2026 rate, so treat any figure you see online — including our calculator's indicative one — as a starting point rather than a price. Confirm on the day, and do not travel to Sarfaranga specifically for it without checking first.
Wind is the deciding factor. Mornings are usually calmer than afternoons, which is the opposite of the best time for the jeep safari.
Facilities at Sarfaranga: what is and is not there
Worth knowing before you arrive with children or plan a long visit:
| Shade | A small shaded waiting area exists, but it is not adequate for the numbers the site gets in peak season. Assume you will be in the sun. |
| Washrooms | Not available. Plan accordingly — Skardu city is around 30 minutes away. |
| Food and drink | Limited. Bring your own water; there is no reliable supply on the dunes. |
| Payment | Cash only for every activity. No card acceptance. |
The absence of washrooms is the detail most people wish they had known. If you are travelling with young children or older relatives, factor it into how long you stay.
Are Sarfaranga activities good value?
Bluntly, no — they are expensive relative to everything else on a Skardu trip. A jeep run at PKR 12,000 for 20 minutes costs roughly what a mid-range hotel room does. Sarfaranga desert safari prices are the highest activity prices in Skardu, and visitors regularly say so. Budget for it separately and agree the price before you start.
Is the Skardu desert safari safe?
It is genuinely fun and genuinely rough. Vehicles come off crests with real force and passengers get thrown around. Not suitable for anyone with back or neck problems, for pregnant travellers, or for very young children. Ask the driver to moderate the run if you are with family — local operators are used to the request. Do not attempt to drive your own vehicle onto soft sand.
Best time of day for a safari
Late afternoon. Better light, cooler sand, and the wind usually drops toward evening. Midday is the worst combination. See Sarfaranga desert weather for current conditions.
Activities and what they cost
| Activity | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Jeep dune safari | Arranged on site with local drivers; a modest per-vehicle fee for a 20–40 minute run over the dune crests |
| Horse riding | Short rides near the entrance, priced per person |
| Quad / ATV hire | Available seasonally; check condition and safety gear before agreeing a price |
None of these are included in a standard vehicle hire. Budget separately, and expect to negotiate. Prices are agreed locally and in cash.

Best time to visit Sarfaranga

Go in the late afternoon. Low sun rakes across the ripples in the sand, casting long shadows that exaggerate the dune height, and the temperature drops sharply once the sun clears the ridgeline. Midday is the worst time. Flat light, hot sand, and the least photogenic version of the place.
Seasonally, roughly April through October. See the best month to visit Skardu for how it fits with everything else.
Sarfaranga cold desert weather
By day, Sarfaranga weather is close to Skardu town, because the dunes sit on the valley floor at about 2,300 m. The sand reflects heat, so it feels warmer than the air in direct sun, and there is no shade. After sunset it cools sharply, and the valley wind that built the dunes blows hardest from midday to late afternoon.
For today's temperature at the desert, see the live Sarfaranga desert weather on our weather board, which shows it next to Skardu town and eight other places.

Sarfaranga or Katpana? The difference
Telling the two dune fields apart
Both are genuine cold deserts on the Skardu valley floor, and locals and travel blogs often use the names loosely. Katpana refers to the dune area nearest Skardu city, while Sarfaranga is the larger field further toward Shigar that hosts the rally. If your time is short, Katpana is closer; if you want the full jeep-safari experience and bigger dunes, go to Sarfaranga.

What to bring
Shigar Fort is 12 km back down the same road — entry PKR 800 per person if you want to combine the two.

- Closed shoes rather than sandals, sand gets hot and the walking is soft underfoot
- A wind layer; the same valley wind that built the dunes is usually blowing across them
- Lens protection or a sealed bag for camera gear. Blown sand is abrasive
- Water and sun protection. The shaded area is small and there are no washrooms
- Cash — activities are expensive here and no card is accepted
Safety
Dune safaris are fun and rough. Vehicles crest steep faces at speed and passengers get thrown around. Not suitable for anyone with back or neck problems, for pregnant travellers, or for very young children. Ask the driver to moderate the run if you are with family; local operators are used to the request. Do not attempt to drive an ordinary car onto soft sand.
Combining it with Shigar Fort

Both sit on the northern road out of Skardu. See the route map and distance table.
Sarfaranga sits on the road toward Shigar Fort, which makes a natural half-day pairing: fort in the morning while the light is good on the woodwork, lunch in Shigar village, then the dunes at golden hour. This is Day 4 of our 5 day Skardu itinerary.
