What this site is
Best Places in Skardu is an independent guide to Skardu, Baltistan and the wider Gilgit-Baltistan region of northern Pakistan. It exists because most Skardu content online falls into two categories: tour-operator pages written to sell packages, and listicles that recycle the same paragraphs without checking whether the details are still true.
The aim here is narrower and more practical. Give travellers the specifics they really need to plan: real driving distances, current-season prices, which vehicle each road requires, and when things are open. Where we don't know something, we say so rather than filling the gap with a confident guess.
Who produces this site
Living in Skardu is the reason the practical detail here holds up: road conditions, prices, opening hours and what is actually open in a given month are checked locally rather than copied from other sites. Where a page relies on published data rather than first-hand observation, that is stated and the source is linked. Every photograph on this site is the author's own, taken on his own trips in northern Pakistan.

If something on this site is wrong, the author reads every correction that comes in. Reports from travellers who have recently been on the ground carry more weight with us than anything we can verify from a desk, and they get applied first.
How the guides are researched
Content is compiled from published travel data, operator rate cards, official Gilgit-Baltistan tourism sources, and conservation and academic literature where relevant. Specifically:
- Distances and altitudes are cross-checked against mapping data and stated as road distances, not straight-line.
- Hotel and transport prices reflect listed 2026 rates and are converted at approximately PKR 283 to US$1. Prices in Skardu move with season and fuel costs, so every figure is a planning estimate, not a quote.
- Factual claims are attributed where the source matters. On the Deosai page, for example, brown bear population figures are cited to the UNDP-supported Deosai Brown Bear Project and the Gilgit-Baltistan Wildlife Department rather than repeated from other travel blogs, because published counts vary by survey.
- Weather data is pulled live from Open-Meteo at page load, for both Skardu town and the Deosai plateau separately, since the two differ by 10–15°C on the same day.
Independence and how we are funded
No hotel, tour operator or transport company pays to appear on this site, and no ranking or recommendation has been bought. Where a property is praised or criticised, that reflects the research rather than a commercial relationship.
How the site is funded: display advertising, and affiliate commission on some links to hotels, booking platforms and travel products. Affiliate links never cost you more and never change what we recommend. Full detail in our advertising and affiliate disclosure.
The distinction that matters: advertisers can buy space on this site. They cannot buy a recommendation, a higher position, or the removal of criticism. If that ever changes, this page will say so.
What we get wrong
Mountain travel information ages quickly. Roads close, hotels change hands, prices rise, and seasonal opening dates shift with snowmelt every year. Some of what is written here will be out of date before it is corrected.
If you find something inaccurate, a price that has moved, a road that has changed, a hotel that has closed, please get in touch. Corrections from people who have recently travelled the route are more valuable than anything we can verify from a desk, and they get applied quickly.
Who this is for
- Pakistani families planning a domestic trip, hence the cost calculator in rupees and the emphasis on which sights work with children.
- Independent and solo travellers – including the safety questions people really ask rather than the reassuring non-answers.
- International visitors arriving with limited time and needing to know what truly fits into five days.
Photography and sources
All photography on this site is our own, taken on the ground in Baltistan, unless a specific image says otherwise. Maps and diagrams are original work. This site is not affiliated with any government body, tourism authority or tour operator.
Frequently asked questions
Who writes Best Places in Skardu?
The site is written and maintained independently, compiled from published travel data, operator rates, official Gilgit-Baltistan tourism sources and academic literature where relevant. It is not affiliated with any tour operator or government body.
Do you accept payment for reviews or listings?
No. No hotel, operator or transport company pays to appear here, and no ranking has been bought. If affiliate links are introduced in future, that will be disclosed on the relevant pages and in the disclaimer.
How current is the pricing information?
Prices reflect listed 2026 rates and are reviewed periodically. Skardu prices move with season and fuel costs, so treat every figure as a planning estimate and confirm directly before booking.
Can I suggest a correction?
Yes, and it is welcome. Use the contact page. Corrections from people who have recently travelled a route are more useful than desk research and are applied quickly.
