Balti food: what to actually order
Most visitors to Skardu eat biryani and karahi, which you can get anywhere in Pakistan. Balti cuisine is its own tradition — closer to Tibetan and Central Asian cooking than to Punjabi food, built on barley, wheat, apricot, dairy and slow-cooked meat. It is rarely spicy. That is not a compromise for tourists; it is how the food is.
These are the dishes worth seeking out, with the spellings you will see on menus:
| Dish | What it is | Where to try it |
|---|---|---|
| Mamtu (momo, moqmoq) | Steamed dumplings filled with minced meat and onion. The most accessible Balti dish for a first-timer. | The Little Tibet, Balti Food House |
| Prapu | A wheat-based dish served with a garlic and butter sauce. Filling, and distinctly Balti. | The Little Tibet, Skardu Balti Cuisine Food |
| Tras Balay (trasbaly) | Layered bread cooked with meat or vegetables — the dish reviewers name most often as the one that surprised them. | The Little Tibet, Balti Food House |
| Muskut (moskoar, marxan) | Chicken slow-cooked with apricot or almond. Sweet and savoury together. | Skardu Balti Cuisine Food, Balti Food House |
| Kisir | A traditional flatbread, usually eaten at breakfast with butter and tea. | Skardu Balti Cuisine Food |
| Fur Fur Biryani | The Balti take on biryani — lighter and less oily than the Punjabi version. | Balti Food House |
| Rsapkhoor | Sprouted barley served with mulberry sauce. Unusual even by Balti standards. | Balti Food House |
| Pharng Balay | A traditional dessert, usually the last thing served. | Balti Food House |
| Yak burger | Not traditional at all — a modern Skardu invention that has become the thing visitors ask for. Yak beef is leaner and denser than ordinary beef. | Yak and Bull Cafe, Baltistan Tea and Grill, Rafsal |
| Balti Brew | Locally roasted coffee. Ask for it by name. | Coffee Yard Skardu |
Best restaurants in Skardu for traditional Balti food
These are family kitchens more than restaurants. Several ask that you call ahead, and the experience is slower and more personal than a standard meal out. That is the point.
The Little Tibet
★★★★★5.0212 reviewsWhat to order: Trasbaly, momos, Prapu, traditional Balti tea
A family home as much as a restaurant. Visitors describe hours spent talking with the hosts, picking cherries and apricots in the garden. If you want to understand Balti food rather than just eat it, start here.
Balti Food House
★★★★★5.0166 reviewsWhat to order: Moqmoq, Tras Ballay, Moskoar, Fur Fur Biryani, Pharng Balay
Herbs and spices come from their own kitchen garden. One reviewer singled out Rsapkhoor, made with sprouted barley and served with mulberry sauce. For delivery, order one to two hours ahead.
Skardu Balti Cuisine Food
★★★★★5.010 reviewsWhat to order: Mamtu, Prapu, Baley, Kisir, Chicken Muskut, Pilav
Home-style cooking with a small number of reviews so far, all of them strong. Dishes are not spicy — that is authentic, not a shortcoming.
Balti Zachas
★★★★½4.922 reviewsWhat to order: Traditional Balti, cooked to your preference
Home cooking adjusted to the guest's taste. Reviewers name the hosts personally, which tells you what kind of place it is.
Zimsa Balti Cuisine
★★★★4.417 reviewsWhat to order: Balti traditional, Chinese, BBQ
Part resort, part restaurant — built in mud and wood. Wider menu than the home-kitchen places, and close to the main bazaar.
Best restaurants in Skardu for a full meal
If you want a straightforward dinner without a two-hour cultural experience, these are the places that consistently deliver. Several also serve Chinese and continental food, which matters if you are travelling with people who will not eat local food for a week straight.
Bzangmo Skardu
★★★★½4.6153 reviewsWhat to order: Zangmo special cheese pasta, white handi, green handi, chilli lemon handi, BBQ platter, chow mein
The closest thing Skardu has to fine dining, and reviewers repeatedly say they did not expect it this far north — elegant interior, attentive service, and a rooftop. The menu spans Balti, Tibetan, Pakistani and Chinese, and Google lists it as serving vegetarian food, which makes it one of the few reliable options in Skardu if you do not eat meat. Prices are reasonable for what arrives. The one recurring complaint is slow service when it is busy, so do not go with a flight to catch.
Rafsal Restaurant
★★★★½4.6697 reviewsWhat to order: Yak burger, chowmein, chicken parmesan pasta, chocolate cake
The most-reviewed restaurant in Skardu by a wide margin. They bake their own butter buns. Family rooms available, and there is a prayer space.
TheQue Skardu
★★★★★5.0465 reviewsWhat to order: Chicken broast, biryani, seekh kabab, beef pulao
Five minutes' walk from Upper Kachura Lake, so it works as a lunch stop on a Kachura lakes day. Several reviewers call the broast the best in Skardu.
Skardu Food Street
★★★★½4.883 reviewsWhat to order: Mutton karahi, continental BBQ
Skardu's first proper food street — several kitchens in one place, which solves the problem of a group that cannot agree. Best in the evening.
Baltistan Tea and Grill House
★★★★½4.934 reviewsWhat to order: Yak burger, yak steak, chicken steak
Views over Kharpocho Fort and the Indus from a central spot by the polo ground. There is a book corner and reliable internet.
Yak and Bull Cafe
★★★★½4.6197 reviewsWhat to order: Yak burger, pizza, Zeerish smoothie
The yak burger specialists. Double patty, and reviewers consistently say it justifies the price. The Zeerish smoothie is local and hard to find elsewhere.
Shabab Restaurant
★★★★½4.912 reviewsWhat to order: Biryani, mixed platters
Budget-friendly and open around the clock, which matters if you arrive late or leave before dawn for Deosai.
Village Restaurant
★★★★½4.972 reviewsWhat to order: Rooftop dining, local and Pakistani standards
Notably cheaper than eating inside Shangrila Resort, which is why several reviewers found it. Rooftop seating.
Shahi Dewan
★★★★4.31450 reviewsWhat to order: BBQ platter, Balay with mutton, Chicken Muskut with garlic naan, beef chilli noodles
The most-reviewed restaurant in Skardu — over 1,450, more than double any other. Its real distinction is BBQ: reviewers who searched for it report Shahi Dewan is the only place in town with a proper indoor charcoal setup, because grilling over charcoal is genuinely harder at altitude and most kitchens simply do not offer it. There is a lift, and private cabins as well as ordinary tables. The 4.3 average is lower than the family kitchens on this page and the complaints are consistent — some diners find it overpriced for what arrives. Go for the BBQ, which is the thing you cannot get elsewhere.
Yak Grill Skardu
★★★★4.450 reviewsWhat to order: Yak burger, yak chilli dry, yak noodles
Several reviewers call the yak burger here the best they have eaten, and the kitchen cooks in front of you. Cards accepted, which is unusual in Skardu. Steak portions draw complaints as small for the price — stick to the burger and the chilli dry. See the note below before you go.
Cafes in Skardu: breakfast, coffee and dessert
Skardu's cafe scene has grown quickly. These are the ones worth your time, particularly if you need somewhere to sit and work, or a proper breakfast before an early start.
The Grind Cafe and Eatery
★★★★½4.7490 reviewsWhat to order: Breakfast, coffee, homemade cake, buckwheat honey
The most reliable all-day option in Skardu, and the one foreign visitors mention most. Staff speak good English, the WiFi works, and there are books on the shelf.
Coffee Yard Skardu
★★★★½4.992 reviewsWhat to order: Balti Brew, espresso-based coffee
If you care about coffee, this is the one. Reviewers who describe themselves as serious about coffee rate it the best in Gilgit-Baltistan. Ask for the Balti Brew.
Mountain Cup Cafe
★★★★½4.6147 reviewsWhat to order: Chicken chowmein, cappuccino, pizza, cake
A branch of the Hunza original. Card payment accepted, which is rare in Skardu — see money and ATMs.
Cafe Shirini
★★★★½4.681 reviewsWhat to order: Cinnamon rolls, brownies, macarons, cold coffee
A dedicated dessert and bakery stop rather than a full meal. Everything is baked in-house. Good after a hot day at the lakes.
Cafe De North
★★★★4.3176 reviewsWhat to order: Turmeric tea, club sandwich, chicken chilli dry, Alfredo pasta
Indoor and outdoor seating, open late. Coffee is well priced for what it is.
Shinwari and Pashtun karahi in Skardu
Shinwari-style karahi and tikka is popular in Skardu and locals recommend it often. There are four separate Shinwari restaurants in and around the city, which causes real confusion — if someone tells you to eat at "Shinwari", ask which one. The best of them for taste is Shinwari Namak Mandi on Airport Road, though it is the priciest and the hardest to find.
| Which one | Where | Rating | Note | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Khan Shinwari & Tikka Karahi | Kachura, opposite the Shangrila gate | 4.6 10 reviews | The best rated of the four. Trout is the thing to order. Open 24 hours. Convenient if you are at the Kachura lakes. | Directions |
| Shinwari Khurak Mahal | Muhib Chowk, near University Road | 4.5 13 reviews | Open 10am to midnight. Too few reviews to judge confidently. | Directions |
| Khan Shinwari & Tikka Karahi | Near the general bus stand, Gayool | 4.0 90 reviews | Mutton karahi is well reviewed. Service complaints recur — long waits and wrong orders. | Directions |
| Shinwari Namak Mandi | Airport Road, near Akbar flour mill | 3.9 68 reviews | The best Shinwari taste of the four, on local knowledge rather than the star average — but priced above the others, and the food is rich. One caution: a reviewer reports the Google Maps pin leads to motor parts and tyre shops, so phone ahead for directions rather than trusting the pin. Solo diners report slow service; this is a place for a group. | Directions |
Which one we would send you to. For taste, Shinwari Namak Mandi on Airport Road — it is the best of the four, though noticeably more expensive and the food is heavy. Its 3.9 rating is dragged down by people who could not find it and by solo diners who waited; if you are a group and you phone ahead, neither applies to you. Call +92 355 4985280 and ask for directions, because the map pin is wrong. If you are already out at the lakes, Khan Shinwari at Kachura is the easier choice and the trout is worth ordering.
Where to eat lunch, dinner and late night in Skardu
Opening hours matter more here than in a big city. Several of the best places are family kitchens that cook to order, some close between meals, and a few run around the clock. This is the practical version, sorted by when you actually want to eat.
Lunch in Skardu
Most sightseeing days put you outside the city at midday, so where you eat lunch depends on where you are rather than what you fancy.
| If you are here | Eat at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| In the city centre | The Grind Cafe, Rafsal, Shahi Dewan | All open through the middle of the day and serve full meals rather than snacks. |
| At the Kachura lakes | TheQue Skardu, Village Restaurant | TheQue is five minutes from Upper Kachura. Village Restaurant is considerably cheaper than eating inside the resort. |
| Heading to Shigar or Sarfaranga | Eat before you leave | There is very little on that road. Sarfaranga in particular has no proper restaurant. |
| Going to Deosai | Carry food | No restaurant on the plateau. Seasonal tea stalls at Bara Pani in July and August only. |
Dinner in Skardu
Evening is when Skardu eats properly, and when the choice is widest. Balti family kitchens are best booked ahead — several cook to order rather than keeping dishes ready.
| Kind of evening | Where | Closes |
|---|---|---|
| A proper dinner out | Bzangmo | 12:30am |
| Traditional Balti, unhurried | The Little Tibet, Balti Food House | 9pm / 10:30pm — call ahead |
| BBQ | Shahi Dewan | 12am |
| Group that cannot agree | Skardu Food Street | 1am |
| Something quick | Yak and Bull, Yak Grill | 11:30pm |
Late night and early morning
If you arrive on a delayed flight, or leave before dawn for Deosai, these are the places that will actually be open.
| Place | Hours | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Shabab Restaurant | Open 24 hours | Hassan Colony. Biryani and platters, budget-friendly. |
| Skardu Balti Cuisine Food | Open 24 hours | Gamba. Traditional Balti at any hour. |
| Village Restaurant | 6am–3am | Kachura. Useful for an early start to the lakes. |
| Skardu Food Street | 8am–1am | Latest of the city-centre options. |
| Balti Food House | From 6:30am | Earliest proper breakfast in town. |
Outside these, Skardu closes early by city standards. If you land after 11pm, assume your hotel kitchen is shut and plan accordingly.
Practical notes on eating in Skardu
| Cash only, mostly | Mountain Cup Cafe and Yak Grill are the places reviewers confirm take cards. Assume everywhere else is cash. See where to get cash in Skardu. |
| Call ahead for Balti food | The home-kitchen places cook to order. Balti Food House asks for one to two hours' notice on delivery; others prefer a call before you set out. |
| Vegetarian options are limited | Balti cooking is meat-heavy and most kitchens have little for vegetarians. Bzangmo is listed as serving vegetarian food and has the widest menu; The Grind Cafe and the other cafes are the other reliable fallback. Say so when you order rather than assuming a dish is meat-free. |
| BBQ is hard to find | Charcoal grilling is more difficult at Skardu's altitude, so most restaurants do not offer it. Shahi Dewan is the place reviewers name for proper indoor BBQ. |
| Power cuts are normal | Load shedding affects Skardu. Most restaurants run generators, but service can slow during an outage. |
| Evenings are busiest | Skardu Food Street and the cafes fill after sunset. For a quiet meal, eat early. |
| Nothing on the plateau | There is no restaurant in Deosai beyond seasonal tea stalls at Bara Pani. Carry food for the day. |
| Prices are 2026 estimates | We do not publish menu prices because they change. Budget roughly PKR 800–2,000 per person for a full meal, more at hotel restaurants. Model the whole trip on the trip cost calculator. |
Several of the best places to eat sit in or near the main bazaars, so it is easy to pair a meal with buying dried apricots or handicrafts. See our guide to shopping in Skardu for the shops worth visiting.
How we chose these restaurants
Every restaurant on this page was checked against Google Places data — rating, review count, hours, location and what reviewers actually said. We read the negative reviews as carefully as the positive ones.
Three places were excluded. Skyway Pizza and Rahat Pizza both draw repeated complaints about quality and value, and Skyway also draws complaints about the price charged differing from the menu. The Food Corridor sits at 4.1 from 368 reviews with detailed complaints about portions not matching the description. All three are easy to find if you want them; we did not think they belonged on a shortlist.
Some entries reflect local knowledge, not just ratings. Where our own experience on the ground disagrees with a star average, we say so and explain why — a rating can be pulled down by people who could not find the place or who ate alone somewhere built for groups, neither of which tells you anything about the food. Shinwari Namak Mandi is the clearest example on this page.
Ratings are a snapshot. Star ratings and review counts were accurate when this page was last updated and will drift. A restaurant with 12 reviews at 4.9 is less proven than one with 697 at 4.6 — we have shown both numbers so you can judge for yourself rather than trusting a star average alone.
